Veneers

Veneers

If your teeth are misshapen, have experienced damage, or cracked, cosmetic veneers can remake your teeth into looking brand new, shiny, and healthy.

A veneer is a porcelain face or shell that is cemented on the front of a tooth. Where a crown completely surrounds the tooth, a veneer preserves healthy tooth structure and provides only a new face. Veneers are commonly used to correct minor spacing problems, discolored teeth, discolored fillings, and chipped teeth.

Types

There are three different types of veneers, composite, porcelain, and lumineers. Cosmetic veneers and fillings are dental techniques that repair spaces between teeth, cover permanent tooth stains, hiding unattractive fillings. Veneers are excellent for improving the appearance of badly shaped teeth and restores confidence in smiling and self-esteem.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers cost less and only take one dental visit to complete the application. Composite veneers are repairable if damaged. The disadvantages of composite veneers are that they do not appear as natural or appealing as a porcelain veneer, are not as long lasting, and discolor more quickly than porcelain veneers. Chipping and cracking is also more common.

Lumineers

Lumineers are a brand of veneers. Lumineers are made from a specific porcelain type that allows the veneer to be made as thin as a contact lens. Lumineers often require less removal of healthy tooth structure than a traditional venner. In some cases lumineers can be placed without any need for painful anasthesia.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are excellent at recreating the natural look of teeth. They also provide durability that is similar to tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers are chosen by many to change their tooth shape, size, and color.

Porcelain veneers have many advantages over composite veneers. They appear much more like your natural teeth, and are more aesthetically appealing than a composite veneer. Porcelain veneers are much stronger and durable and do not wear down. They do not not stain as easily or fast as a composite veneer.

How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?

Porcelain laminate veneers consist of a compilation of several thin ceramic layers which replace original tooth enamel, and an adhesive layer. The process involves removing a very small amount of the original tooth enamel. a millimeter or less. This process is essential because it allows room for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth and most accurately restore natural tooth function while creating a better appearance than the original tooth.

A strong bond between the porcelain veneer and the original tooth is critical as it provides the esthetic perfection sought, and proper veneer function. A light sensitive resin is applied between the original tooth and the veneer, then a special curing light is used to harden the resin.

Why Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent option for situations where the original tooth has developed poor color, shape, and contours. They also work well for fractured teeth, gaps between teeth, and in some cases where the tooth position is compromised and minor bite-related problems exist. Porcelain veneers may be the best alternative for some people who have stains that do not react well to tooth whitening or bleaching.

Are Veneers An Option For You?

The first step in determining whether veneers are a good option for you, or if another solution is better, is to visit with the dentist to get an evaluation. It is important for you to inform the dentist about what cosmetic improvements you want to achieve.

The dentist will start with an analysis of your smile to determine what steps are necessary to accomplish your desired smile. The dentist may create a diagnostic mock-up that allows you to try on veneers and other procedures to see if the final result is what is desired by you. The dentist may also provide you a photo (cosmetic imaging) of what your new smile will look like.
